Dinosaurs Like Online Games?

Hey, we may have built this city on Rock N’ Roll, but I’ll bet some Rock also fueled game development efforts. I do not know why it so shocking when Yahoo came out with a report that men and women over 40 play video games. They seemed even more suprised to find that women over 40 play online games, then they were to find that “mature” (LOL) men did.

Their top baby boomer game hits do tend to be a bit different then Grand Theft Auto or World of Warcraft. I’m sure that boomers do play those games, but they do tend to be very time intensive and violent. I think that most of us can picture ourselves getting involved in the longer and more intense games when we were younger, but now we just can’t spare the times and our tastes have changed a bit.

Nowadays, games can mean PC games, or game systems, or even your cell phone! Of course, many manufacturers try to produce popular games for different platforms, so you should be able to find a version of your favorite game that runs on whatever machine you own.

Here are some of my suggestions for baby boomer gaming:

• Guitar Hero - After all, you still love Rock N’ Roll, Don’t You?
• Bejeweled and Tetris - These are arcade style games that you can play within a couple of minutes. Careful, they get addictive, and those short games can start eating up hours
• Online Scrabble - You can play against the computer, and choose different levels so you have a chance to win. You can also set it up to play against another human.

Do Car Insurance Companies Like Insuring Drivers Over 50?

You Bet They Do!

There are actually some good things about being in your fifties. You can probably get a discount on your auto insurance. Insurance companies live and die by their statistics. It seems they have noticed that drivers in their fifties are more likely to have more mature driving styles and attitudes (read – they don’t speed and cut in and out of traffic) than younger drivers. This means there are less claims by the over 50 group and therefore the insurance company can charge a lower rate.

If you have not looked at your policy for awhile, you should ask your insurance provider if you qualify for the discounted rate. Generally discounts run from about 5% to 10%. Industry surveys have shown that many over 50 policies come with additional features such as emergency additional driver coverage and roadside breakdown discounts. Make sure you read the fine-print so you know what you are getting. As always shop around to get the best price because rates really do vary from company to company.

When you get to be over sixty, the insurance companies have found that while older drivers do not get so many tickets, they have been making more accident claims. You know how insurance company math works – More claims = higher rates. But there is a bright spot here. If you are a member of AARP, you can take an online course geared toward older drivers for defensive driving for $15.95. It takes 8 hours but you don’t have to do it all at once. The program will save your place. After taking the course you may receive a 10% discount for a three year period. You will need to check with your insurance agent beforehand to see if your policy has this option.

Finish your Degree at 50?

Why not go back to school. It’s not like you have to pack up and move into a dorm or anything these days. We find a plethora of community colleges, local universities, and online degree programs that cater to older students who want to complete or enhance their higher educations. You can find a local school or online course for just about anything you want to study.

One of our favorite College Finance Sites, CollegeMoneyU.com - has posted a Free Local Education Search Link online. Explore the possibilities in your own area. I think this is especially useful for older students who have been out of school for awhile, and may not have the resources of a school counselers office. It is also really useful if you have just moved into a new town, and you really do not know what colleges are out there.

The Post War Generation Comes Of Age

Well the US Department of Census weighed in on the big question: Who is a Baby Boomer? I have seen these dates defined a little differently, but the Census says that baby boomers were born from 1946 - 1964, an almost 20 year span of great American fertility. After World War II, Americans got down to the business of making love not war, and that’s why baby boomers are also called the post-war generation. Apparently, in the US, when we say war, WWII is the war we mean.

We Are Aging

First Boomers Are Over 60

The special edition census report came out in 2006 and made note that in that year the oldest baby boomers were turning 60. In fact, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush counted themselves in that class. Other persons of note who turned 60 in 2006 were Cher, Donald Trump, Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton.

Boomers and Social Security

The report goes on to note that almost 8,000 people a day turned 60 in 2006. Two years later, most of those same people are turning 62, and that means that some of them will begin the flood of social security recipients. The census bureau estimates that by 2031, when all baby boomers are at least 65, there will only be 2.1 workers for each social security recipient. So we don’t have to be a psychic to see the potential problem there.

Can You Afford To Retire?

According to an AARP study, 8 out of 10 baby boomers say they plan to work after they retire from their current posiiton. Some of them say they only plan to work part time, and others think that retirement will be a great time to start their own businesss. While some baby boomers are looking forward to retirement as a chance to perform rewarding work, others just understand that their savings or retirement plan will not provide enough money for the life they plan to live.

Why Work after Retirement?

So some retired people will finally have the freedom to chase a passion or hobby they may have enjoyed before. I have plenty of friends who have always dreamed of being their own boss but just did not want to take a chance while they still enjoyed a good job with steady paychecks and benefits.

But of course, other retired baby boomers will just be finding service work to keep the lights on. Many professionals like teachers and policemen will retire on 2/3 of their income. The theory that this should be enough since debts like mortgages are paid off just doesn’t always work in the modern economy. Other financial obligations like helping kids pay for college are much steeper then they were a generation ago.

Consider Freelance Work or Work At Home Business

I would like to suggest that the internet has made whole new areas of freelance work available. For instance look at SimpleWork.org for this article on Freelance Work At Home and also Ebay Work At Home. Of course, not all freelance jobs are done at home, and working alone is NOT for EVERYBODY! I have found freelancing jobs for everything from commercial drivers to child care to corporate training.

Get Free Italian Recipes and Donate To Charity Too

Cheap Eats Section of CheapSkateLiving.org. They just posted a pretty good deal too. Actress Marissa Tomei was helping to fight hunger with a recipe in Mario Batali’s celebrity Italian cookbook. It’s nice to see celebrities giving back, instead of just taking and getting bad press.

You can download the whole cookbook for free until March 31, 2008, and $1 will be donated to charity with every download. The charity will fight hunger in the US with Second Harvest. The donations won’t stop either, until they have reached $100,000! Get more information at Cheap Eats!
