I think that's why it is so important to develop more than one stream of income. Passive investments are fine, but maybe we need to think outside the box a bit. I am thinking of investing in some sort of turnkey business that I can run without exerting myself too much. I guess I'd just like more control over my finances. You are right, and the last few years have tought me this.

What are you top concerns about retirement. I think for most of us, unless we are just blessed with some wonderful company plan, it is $$$.

Are you even planning to retire at 65? Surveys report that a lot of us are figuring we will just work till we drop. ... or at least well past the traditional target of age 65. Lots of us plan to leave our current jobs, but continue working somewhere.

How did we get this way?

I saw an advertisement on TV that I think was very deceptive! It started out with President Obama announcing that health reform had passed, and then slid into this slimy announcer who said that Americans could now get health benefits for $3/day. .. It was probably a discount plan, which are NOT health insurance people.

I cannot believe ads like this are legal!

These are practical suggestions. Of course peoople with more specialized skills wil have more choices. But I like the idea of brainstorming ideas for people who don't think they have the education, skills, or resources to start a business.

They guy who mowed my lawn is a great example. He was a Hurricane Katrina refuge a few years ago, and he borrowed a truck and lawn mower from some family here. Then he started knocking on doors of neighborhood people with lawns that were not well kept. He kept at it. Now, a few years later, he has purchased his own new truck and equipment, and he employs some of those family members who helped him!

This all may be obvous, but I enjoyed this article on reasons why the "over 50" set would change careers. After investing in education and a lifetime experience, it may seem odd that a middle aged person would decide to switch. Or at least it may seem strange that so many of them are doing it! But it's out there in record numbers right now.

These are some simple business startup ideas, mostly meant for people who still need to moonlight and have little to invest.

The great thing about the article is that it can really help a person start brainstorming business ideas, where before that person may have thought that there was no way they could start a business

The actual ideas on the list are, in my opinion, practical suggestions that really do work.
