Why Do Teens Text Message So Much?

textmsg.jpg Teens may like to text message their parents because it is a way to perform essential communication while keeping some distance. And just like all generations come up with their own lingo, the weird language of text messaging can be hard for parents to decifer. Of course, it makes sense to shorten words because, face it, text messaging is a little harder than keyboarding because all we have are telephone keys.

Text Message Primer

If your teen’s cryptic text confuses you, then you fit right in to the baby boomer generation! I know my own teens would prefer to text me, but it usually takes me a long time to respond because I am slow. To teens, it probably seems like a way to communicate while keeping a distance. To me it seems slow and clumsy!

Here are some common abbreviations that people use in chat. This should help you move your clumsy middle aged fingers over those keys. So pull out your own cell phone and practice keying in these simple texting codes!

AWGTHTGTTA - Are we going to have to go
through this again?
• AEAP - As early as possible
• CYR MA – Call your mother
• CYR PA – Call your father
• CYT or SYT - See you tomorrow
• DBL84DNR – Don’t be late for dinner
• EM? - Excuse me?
• GUDLUK – Good luck
• H&K - Hugs and kisses
• HAND – Have a nice day
• HF – Have fun
• IMNSHO - In My Not So Humble Opinion
• ILU or ILY - I Love You

Actually AT&T has even had the courtesy to publish Text Messaging For Parents! You can have a great chat with your kid, without even speaking to them.
